When Heat Is On, Check on Elderly, Disabled Neighbors

With temperatures expected to reach the 90s to 100s in inland valleys and foothills through this weekend, the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) reminds the public to take some precautions, as well as keep an eye on elderly and disabled relatives and neighbors to make sure they’re keeping cool.

“Seniors with limited mobility, as well as the disabled and ill, are especially vulnerable to high temperatures,” said Dean Sidelinger, M.D., M.S.Ed., County Deputy Public Health Officer. “If they can’t cool off at home, take them to a Cool Zone, or mall or other air-conditioned location.”

County Announces "Purrfect" Summer Adoption Event

Due to a seasonal influx of kittens in the County's three animal shelters, the County Department of Animal Services will waive all adoption fees, beginning today, June 1 through September 4, for cats 6 months and older. Only two cats per person can be adopted.

"Our three County shelters are really packed right now and we don't want to compromise the health of the cats and kittens by holding more animals then we can properly care for," said Dawn Danielson, Director of the Department of Animal Services.

"We are looking for new pet parents who know that they want to add a new four-legged family member, but they just haven't taken the time to visit our shelters. By waiving the adoption fee for cats, we’re hoping that will encourage loving families to make the commitment to adopt a pet."

County Seeks Input on Locations for Mental Health Service Facilities

The County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) will hold four community forums to gather input from the public and the mental health community on possible locations for mental health service facilities.

The facilities will be used to provide mental health services or will serve as administrative offices. Funding for the services and facilities comes from the Mental Health Services Act, approved by California voters in 2004.

Mental Health Clients Remove Labels to End Stigma

San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) officials today were joined by dozens of people living with a mental illness, together with their family and friends to bring awareness to stigma and how everybody plays a role in eliminating it.

“Labels hurt. Stigma hurts,” Markov Manalo, Recovery Educator/Employment Coordinator with Recovery Innovations of California, told the group, which gathered outside the County Administration Center to share their stories of mental illness and talk about how stigma has impacted their lives.

Mental health clients wore brightly-colored T-shirts with labels naming their mental illness. Friends and relatives wore T-shirts indicating their relation to the clients.

“It is so easy to label someone and overlook what’s inside. Today, we are removing those labels and putting an end to stigma,” added Manalo, who guided the group to remove the labels in an effort to eliminate stigma.

OMA Culinary Cinema Series: "Gloomy Sunday"

Engage your senses at Oceanside Museum of Art’s Culinary Cinema Series, a program that pairs food themed films with mouth-watering cuisine in the beautiful setting of the museum. On Saturday, February 27th at 5:30 pm the museum will screen the classic film “Gloomy Sunday” and serve a delicious dinner inspired by the film’s tantalizing “beef roll.” The Culinary Cinema event will begin with tray passed hors d’oeuvres, beer and wine leading into the viewing of the award winning film “Gloomy Sunday”. Immediately after the screening, guests will enjoy a formal sit down dinner. The talented Chef Steve Akin of San Diego’s iconic DZ Akins will prepare a gourmet meal including roulade of beef stuffed with imported cheeses, served alongside a medley of vegetables, potatoes and fresh homemade breads. The evening will end with a dessert and coffee bar. Reservations are required in advance and limited to 80 guests. Cost is $60 for OMA members, and $75 for non-members.
